A bedside table is an essential piece of furniture in the bedroom, at least for those of us who need a place to rest for a book, a glass or a drink in the middle of the night. But finding space for full-size bedside tables in a small bedroom can be a challenge. Read on to see how floating shelves or bedside tables solve this dilemma in the room. Which one inspires you?
1. Floating shelves provide plenty of space for the essentials of the bedside table: a vase of flowers, a candle (possibly with a soothing scent like lavender), and a book. The designer saved surface space in this north London bedroom by opting for a hanging pendant.
2. Since there was not enough space on the sides of this bed, the designers created a narrow but deep shelf. This photo from the same bedroom shows how the floating shelves are neatly aligned with the walls of the alcoves. The space underneath them can still be used to store items; Here, it’s a black box, but baskets, decorative boxes, and even a bunch of books will do.
3. There is no reason why the floating shelves need to be wooden. Blogger Michelle Hinckley spotted this vintage version at a real estate auction and sprayed it white. Slim task lights provide lightweight illumination.
4. This bedroom has more space on either side of the bed. Still, it’s a good illustration of how a floating bedside table can create a sense of buoyancy in a room. Since the underside of the wall-mounted table does not take up floor space, the room looks more open.
5. The passages on either side of this bad block are not wide, but the two floating cubes create the illusion of more space because they don’t fill the entire gap. Chandeliers save surface space. The feature walls are cedar planks.
6. This floating bedside table is made of the same wood as the feature wall behind the bed for a modern, minimalist look.
7. This space isn’t as small as some others, but the walls behind the bed don’t have much space on either side of the bed frame. Floating shelves have two tiers, providing more space to store your nighttime essentials.
8. This floating option is not a real shelf at all, but a ledge built into the wall panel. Inside there is a clock radio and plants, and there is also room for glasses and a mobile phone.
